Hi,

My ten year old son has been complaining of a "bruised" eye, this morning.
It's not actually bruised, but he says that's what it feels like.
He had a headache yesterday, which is unlike him, but he says this has now gone.
I've given him some Nurofen for children, about half an hour ago, but it's obviously not taken affect yet, as he says it still hurts.
Does anyone know what this may be, and should I take him to the doctor?

He's been having quite a few late nights, recently, and has been up wither reading or on his DS.
I'm wondering if he could have maybe strained his eye? Is that possible/likely?

Thanks in advance.

It sounds like he may have strained his eye. Does he wear glasses?
The other possibility is that he has got a stye.
Question Author
No, doesn't wear glasses.
I've told him no games, today... and definitely an early night, tonight!

I'll keep an eye on it.
try putting a cold damp flannel over the eye for a little while - may just soothe it down for him. Ask him if it feels as though his eye ball is too big for the socket - I know its a funny question but thats the only way I can describe that bruised eye feeling, which usually happens when I've had a migraine. I would take him for his eyes to be tested in the near future - but it may be related to the headache he had yesterday. Hope he feels better soon xxx
Question Author
Nini, Thanks. I asked him, and he said that is what it feels like. He said his eye feels like it's "bulging".
I think an eye test would be a good idea :-)
You mean ONE eye strained and not the other?.....unlikely scenario I would have thought.
It doesn't sound anything that would need medical or ophthalmological scrutiny at the moment......ONE Nurofen for children ?......double the dose.
Question Author
Ohh, hello Sqad :-)
How are you?

I was going to post a medical question relating to myself, for your attention, but I gather your not well yourself? Hope you get better soon.

The Nurofen for kids is in medicine form, so I just stuck to what it said on the side of the bottle. 10ml?
And yep, definitely just the one eye.
flip......LOL....yepp, just one eye.

Came home yesterday.....good to be back and doing OK.
Question Author
LOL!!

Ah, good. I'm really pleased to hear you're doing ok.

You take care of yourself Squaddle :-) xx

sqadlet, nice to read you are back home x

Flip, it might be migraine or the remnants of one. (Hooe not)
2shorts.......thanks....I am playing the "old soldier" now for the sympathy vote and a cuppa on demand from mrs sqad......;-)

flip, can you turn down the brightness of his egames ?

shadow of yourself sqad, eh ? Good to have you back, avatar - nice :)
Question Author
No problemo. I'm sure there are lots of people wanting to give Sqad some kind words.
I agree... milk it for all it's worth! :))

Good idea about adjusting the brightness of his games, Tambo. I've put a ban on them for the time being, to see if it makes any difference.
I do hope it's not a migraine thing either, Alba. I'm going to book him in for an eye test, tomorrow.
Thanks! :-)

I get a similar feeling with a migraine - could have set one off if he is staring at a screen with flashing lights etc... a lot.

Have you seen him playing the games? Is there anything like a shooting game where he might be playing one eyed/squinting etc...

Could be something allergy/irritant related but doesn't sound like other allergy symptoms like pain, itching, watering, redness etc...

I've been told my eyes are a bit swollen on eye tests before - nothing bad or done about it, just waited to see if they de-swelled :) Had blocked ducts too.
