Ok I have very dark black hair and Ive been interested in getting a blue streak in my hair now for a while but a few people (including a hairdresser) have told me that if i dye my hair it will go grey soon after and at 19 grey is not an option, however i was told that if its done peofessionally by a hair stylist person then the chances of me going grey is reduced

I'm not a hairdresser but I've never heard that before - I'm 36 and have been dyeing my hair since I was about 15 and I haven't gone grey (yet!)

I think this is nonsense! How can dyeing your hair make it go grey? Surely grey hair is caused when the pigment that colours the hair ceases production- caused by generally getting older and wearing out of the stuff!

I would advise that you get a home colouring kit such as http://www.goodgoth.com/specialeffects.htm

If your hair is already very black, you won't be able to see the blue on it. So, you would need to bleach the bit you want to streak first. That might be better off being done by a hairdresser.

My best friend had her hair dyed black for a while and wanted a change so she tried a blue black dye which looked really funky in some lights, she did dye over some blonde also so the blus looked brighter on some parts which was cool. I would listen to your hairdresser, maybe have it put in for a small period of time then dye it back, i have seen some hair products you can get from superdrug which is like styling gel i think which comes in bright blue, red and yellow which was only a fiver or something, my friend bought the red one for a night out and it looked really good on the ends od her hair. It's an alternative to going grey i guess....

Rubbish ;)

A good guide to lightening dyed black hair (like mine) is here: http://web.archive.org/web/20030430220712/http://www.knaresboroughsatellite.com/bleaching4.htm

In a nutshell, if you want parts of your hair blue, your best bet is to colour strip your hair (only if you have dyed it black) and then bleach the parts you want blue (get a hairdresser to do this), then dye those parts blue.

Make sure it's what you want though. Bleaching does damage your hair a bit, so be careful :)

I wouldn't use that hairdresser if I was you! The age at which your hair starts to turn grey is purely genetic - my husband's hair started to turn when he was 20 and he never went near a bottle of dye in his life, before or after!

Bleaching and dying your hair will dry and damage it though if it is not done properly - you could also end up unintentionally with green hair if the bleach is left in too long.

I would buy a can of coloured hairspray from a party supplies shop to see if you like the effect first before you do anything permanent ... at least it can be washed out when you have had enough of it, or you could have a different colour evey day.

I have been bleaching and dyeing my hair for over 10 years and never had any problems like this, BUT, do they mean that the blue on top of black will fade to a greyish colour?  cos I guess that could happen.  I think that adding a streak of colour yourself at home is pretty tricky and so you'd be best getting it done at a salon, and I would imagine they'd bleach your hair before putting the blue in so if it faded at all it would fade to blonde - that's what mine does.

yes, that's exactly what happens, the blue fades, rather like red fades very quick. But to save this from happening too quickly, they

1) bleach the parts required blue

2) pre pigment over this area with a base (preferably blue)

and then 3) the permanent colour blue over the top.

It will look "grey" because of the tones left behind once the blue has faded mixing with the bleached hair underneath.

I dyed my hair blue permanently.. my hair is a dark brown black and i bleached high light and dyed them blue.. and i loved it.. im 18 and havent gone gray and dont plan on it bc who ever told u that.. well twas a lie
