We have a Lavender which has grown too big for its location. I like it where it is though, so how far back can I cut it. I don't want to kill it.

Quite far back, I cut mine back to the woody growth if it gets too leggy.
In Gardener's World this week Monty Don pruned his lavender. I am sure you can see it on catch up or on the Gardener's Wrold website. He pruned it quite hard so that it would keep its shape.
