My friend has looked after my youngest daughter for 1 1/2 hours on Monday afternoon since the beginning of April (term time only). I know she won't be expecting anything for doing this but I want to get her something to show her how much I appreciate her help. She's a stay-at-home mum who isn't into girly stuff, etc. I don't want to spend too much (as she would be embarrassed and because I haven't got a lot to spend). Thanks for any ideas.

a bottle of plonk?
How about a hand made book of vouchers - they could be for babysitting for her, ironing, cleaning, gardening etc
What about cinema vouchers? Or you could ask her out for a girly night with meal at Pizza Express or such.
Pot plants are fairly cheap and easily available (in large supermarkets, etc), so you wouldn't have to make a special shopping trip to buy one as a gift. Further, unlike cut flowers (or other traditional 'thank you' gifts, like chocolates) they last quite some time.
A voucher for a facial or massage.
take her to the cinema some time. I'll bet you could both do with some time out!
What type of films is she into? what about a couple of DVDs?

Bring her in a bag of shopping.
How about a hand made card that your daughter decorates herself and a box chocs?
Morrison's do lovely flowers including nice roses for a fiver.

Thanks for all your suggestions - think I'm going to do a 'night in in a box (or bag!)' - DVD, some booze, some chocs, some nibbles.
that sounds really nice!

In the end, I got my friend a chick-flick DVD, a tube of pringles, four cans of cider (which she prefers to wine), a bag or popcorn and a Terry's chocolTe orange - all presented in a Barbie present bag (which her daughters can then have). Perfect night-in and she was delighted as she didn't expect anything for helping me out.
herr..come to mine any time
great result sher - you know your friend!
Make sure she likes what you are going to buy. Personally I would not like anyone to buy me a pot plant. Not because I don't like flowers but because I forget they are there and the poor things die from neglect. Cut flowers are O.K. or a plant I can put in the garden.
