Has anyone got any magic cures for toothache?  One of my wisdom teeth is coming through and is really painful - all up my face, not just in my mouth.  I've been taking painkillers and bonjella but nothing is working.  And after a third night with very little sleep (I was awake between 2.30 and 6am last night) I'm at the end of my tether.  Help!

Thanks

Try making a paste with aspirin (paracetomol won't work) and water and rubbing it on.  Or anbesol (baby teething gel) might help.

...or go to the dentist and get it removed - fairly painful, but it's well worth it!

i'm having my last one out in a couple of weeks and i (sort of) can't wait!

My dentist recommended a combination of paracetamol and nurofen (one tablet of each) for this type of pain - one to deal with the usual pain and one to address the nerve pain.
Clove oil is very good

I went to dentist last week for the exact same problem. My tooth is in the right place, so it is not pushing the other teeth, but the reason it hurt was that "dirt" could get under the gum over the tooth. She disinfected it, showed my how to brush that stupid tooth and told me to use mouthwash. It helped, even the headache disappeared!?! My mum told me to chew licorice root and my mother-in-law told me to drip whiskey on it. Don't know if any of those will help, but if you just drink the whiskey it is bound to help :-)

yry painkiller or apply heat to area which is sore just outside the mouth that works for me

Thanks everyone - just been to Boots and been given some stronger painkillers, will try all your other suggestions if they don't work.
I've just had a tooth out and the pain woke me through the night. Tried the old 'remedy' of 'holding' a mouthful of Scotch (doesn't work with any other spirit) over the affected area for about 10 mins. (Do 2 lots of 5 mins if you can't fight the urge to spit it out). The secret is to not swallow the Scotch. No problem for me, as I don't like it! Worked for me; back to bed for another 5 hours kip.
Oil of cloves, or rinse mouth with soluable aspirin before swallowing it.
Dentist after taking valium and whiskey was the final solution for me.
Now found a dentist who treats me like a scared 5 yr old and I can visit without drugs or alcohol.
sddsddean - what a waste of whisky! If you swallow it after holding it over your tooth it works even better in numbing the pain.
