You are not supposed to as it stops the medication from working, and you can also experience side effects.

Best not to.  Hopefully you only have a one week course, it's not long  - you'll live!!
Apparently its all rubbish - you are able to take antibiotics with alcohol within reason - no side effects at all.  Check in a new medical website.
Most of the time, all alcohol does is increase to sedative effect of the drug.  It doesn't stop the medicine from working.
I think that Milly is correct, having worked in a pharmacy people were advised not to drink whilst taking antibiotics as it stops them from working. there are no other side effets that i am aware of.
If you actually look at the site milly suggested it says :-

What should I avoid while taking amoxicillin?
Alcohol may irritate your stomach if taken with amoxicillin, so use it with moderation.
I stand corrected, this does not apply to amoxicillin but metronidazole, cephamandole and oral ketoconazole.
I too, wondered this while I was taking it.  It didn't say not to on the bottle (yep, I had the medicine as I'm a baby at swallowing tablets) lol - anyway I decided not to - better to be safe!
