Last Tuesday I went to the dentist and she found an abcess which had been causing pain. She pulled the tooth which unfortunately shattered. She assured me however she had removed all the bits of the tooth. My questions are (1) where does the stuff in the abcess go when the tooth is pulled and (2) should I still be feeling very tender in the socket area? I need to take paracetomol to help it.

Thanks - how long will the tenderness last?
IF

a) she has removed all the remnants.
b) there is no secondary infection.

By the weekend.
Many moons ago, had an abscess and like you, tooth was pulled. If memory serves me right, was tender for about a fortnight but salt-water mouth rinses helped.
Did'nt think theycould take a tooth out with a abcess underneath. You usually get antibiotics first?
The most appropriate treatment of an abscess is to achieve drainage of the infection. Extraction is one of the best ways of getting drainage.
