I've developed a hip problem that will necessitate a replacement. Trouble is I can't do the amount of exercise I'm used to (walking, running, cycling) and in consequence I'm putting on weight which exacerbates the hip problem. Anyone got any useful calorie-burning exercise whilst I'm on the waiting list? I'm 69 y-o.

That is quite a problem. Diversifying for the moment, in "letters to the editor" daily Telegraph yesterday, about funds for hip replacements against no funds for kidney cancer drugs the obese were berated for bringing on OA themselves. BUT it is quite often the case, that because of pain and immobility exercise is dramatically curtailed bringing on weight increase. In answer to your question I would suggest that swimming is your answer. Big problem.

Thanks Squad. I'm trying that but kicking is a problem so I'm only swimming with the arms. I've tried 'butterfly stroke' - where you keep your feet together and do a 'dolphin' kick, but I've swallowed half the pool trying!!!
I've devised a few upper body things, but they are not truly aerobic - building strength without burning enough calories.
There are machines in gyms where you can do cardio work with your arms.
