Use this to calculate the best heart rate you should exercise at:

You had a different setting to your friend - she may have had hers set at 'fat burning' and you at 'cardio' , for example.

Different heart rate targets for different things.
Heart rates are worked out from age and at the intensity you are working at.

Most people work at between 65% and 85% of their maximum heartrate. Your maximum heartrate for your age would be 206. If you work at 65% which is moderate intensity, your heartrate should get to about 134 beats per minute and at 85%, (medium to high intensity) then it would climb to around 175bpm

Usually if you are very fit, your heartrate will not escalate to high figures, but if you are unfit, then moderate intensity, will cause heartrates to soar. As you become fitter, you will find your heartrate will not climb as high.

Perhaps your friend has better fitness levels than you, but the more cardiovasular activity you do, the fitter you will become and stamina will increase.
