Mr Overall's mum had cervical cancer and her treatment wasn't nice. The cancer spread and she had a horrible operation called a vulvectomy - don't try googling that one if you've just eaten because it will turn your stomach. She eventually died at a young age. For the record, cervical cancer is NOT always caused by sexual contact at an early age.
Any vaccination which has a good chance of preventing this disease can only be a good thing.
I hate to be a pessimist but in my experience, no amount of vaccination and check ups can stop some people from getting cancer. Likewise if you beat it the 1st time round, it'll come back for you and get you in the end.
I agree, mrs_overall.

My grandmother had the same operation after her cervical cancer pread. She didn't lose her virginity until the day she married at 24 years old.

I have read about the man (a doctor) who will be refusing to vaccinate his daughter in case it gives her the idea to start having sex!
I think this is a very good idea - though the cost would be very high (costing approx 300 pounds per child i believe) the number of lives saved would be amazing.

On a side note legend this vaccination is to prevent the human papiloma virus which can cause cervical cancer, they will be giving the vacccination to the young as the virus is spread by sexual contact but it doesn't mean that early sexual contact is more at risk of cervical cancer i believe just that they wish to vaccinate before sexual contact, whenever that might be, occurs and thus reduce the risk of cancer later in life... i'm not sure that paragraph made sense - sorry have a news link instead its prob more awake than me... i need more coffee

IF you contract HPV before you are 17, this esposes the cervix at a more susceptible time. I am pretty sure that cancer caused by HPV is as near to the 100% mark as it could be. Thats why women who have had it have to have yearly smears.

Of course its a good idea. Vaccinating between the ages of 12 and 13 would hopefully get most girls before they start getting active with boys.
if they have this vaccine they are apparently garubnteed not to get cervical cancer.
the hpv virus can be carried by men to women and so after first time of sex with a man whos second time say you can get hpv leading to cervical cancer.
its not about sleeping with lots of folk either.
the guy i mentioned his first time mightve been with someone with 5 partners but they all had partners too.
so when you think about it its spread so easily.
but can be prevented for 300 pounds.
sounds a good deal to me .

hope the analogy didnt bore you.was trying to make a point .
the more people you sleep with, the more chance you have of contracting HPV, thats where the correlation between cervical cancer and sexual partners come in.
well i did read that hpv can be contracted from initial sexual contact.
its not a numbers thing.
more a case of luck if your partner or partners have hpv.
there is a link somewhere but im not at home sorry.
as i say first time can get it quite easily.

thats why vaccinate before any contact.
if theyev had contact it wont work.goody
my daughter is four, as soon as she is old enough id have it given to her. Some people on tv have said its bad as it encourages sexual promiscuity in young girls, i think thats ridiculous, that wont have any effect on that atall. its a good idea.
