Dear 4getmenot - you may be prepared to look stupid in ear muffs but mself is a follwer of fashion and wouldn't be seen dead in a pair of ear muffs -I would rather stuff cotton wool in my ears as more discreet !
A good friend of mine bought me some for xmas. Nowt wrong with ear muffs :-) I get pain in my ears too but they are big and I also get a really aching jaw. But you're right, I still havent worn the muffs :-)
ergh I get this too, im not so bad when im out in the cold but as soon as i get back in the warm my ears and jaw are really painful.

I can knit you a Benny hat.

Benny hat? *points* BENNY ON THE LOOSE!!!
Help!
What have I said?!?
I was only trying to point out that if you wear a hat it keeps your head warm and you're less likely to get ear-ache.
Have I started WW3?
If you're knitting Benny hats, the only colour you can use is bottle green - it's the law!
only one solution,,,,,,,,,,,,, a balaclava helmet.
