As we seem to have had several questions from Staffy owners lately, I wondered if you are aware that there are now two DNA tests that can be carried out to determine whether your dog is affected, clear or a carrier of two diseases, one is Hereditary Cataracts and the other is called L2-HGA, which affects the dog by causing seizures, a wobbly 'gait' or in some cases total collapse. Symptoms often show between 6 months and 1 year old. The Animal Health Trust has details on their website, www.aht.org and all Staffy owners should carry out tests before they consider mating their dogs, and puppy buyers should expect their breeders to have had their dogs tested before selling a puppy.
