Agree with it as far as people with underlying health problems, but not a blanket cover of people over 70.
I think discriminatory is perhaps not the best word. You could argue the current lockdown discriminates on disability grounds in that tighter measures (shielding) apply to those with diabetes, heart problems, dementia, etc.
If it was for a few weeks people might accept it but it would lead to resentment and I doubt the police would want to police it. Anyway, how would over 70s shop. A compromise may just to give 'strong advice' for fit over 70s to continue to stay indoors- which is in fact what we have now
FF, but it is not only the over 70's that are advised to stay indoors. It is every one who does not have a legal reason for being outdoors.
It seems to be a fact that Afro-caribbeans are more affected by the virus than whites. I wonder what the reaction would be if it were to be announced that whites would be released from lockdown but blacks would still have to be isolated.
‘It seems to be a fact that Afro-caribbeans are more affected by the virus than whites’

Does it? Do you have a link which proves that?
Zacs - I can't provide a link but there was a chart in one of the papers the other day and it has been widely mentioned on TV.
The OP is about the over 70's, not Afro Caribbeans.

Yes I know. I was referring to over 70s. am not sure I suggested otherwise
I’ve no underlying health problems and yes I would certainly feel discriminated against at 73 yrs old

the government are taking it seriously

so are the labour party - although theirs is in trouble already for assigning the wrong person to lead it
https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/25/leading-muslims-hit-out-at-trevor-phillipss-role-in-covid-19-bame-deaths-inquiry
Other way round, mushroom- it's the government one that has Trevor Phillips leading it- and the Muslims are up in arms .
I think Labour's review is being led by Baroness Lawrence
my bad - but I knew labour's also had a controversial choice of lead..
….but regardless, if either one doesn't show that the disproportion is caused by racially motivated deprivation, there will be screams of protest.

The politicians and scientists need to think about the mental and emotional health of the over 70s, many of whom are going stir-crazy over not being able to see their children and grandchildren (a) because it would involve an "unnecessary journey" and (b) they're not in the same household.
Do we think it might be the tighter communities that BAME people tend to live in which might be the factor, rather than their ethnicity?
there was a section of the Jeremy vine show yesterday devoted to reaction to a "drive-by" party hosted outside a care home somewhere in east Anglia. the organisers ran it past the police before they went ahead and although they didn't get it rubber stamped, they weren't told they couldn't. it was this action (or inaction) by the police that attracted the most vitriol..

Could we please return to my OP and say whether you would support further stringent lockdown for the over 70s?
Over 70s may well feel they have limited time to enjoy life and rebel at being forced to have a lower quality of life while others enjoy more freedom. What do they intend to do if such a discriminatory rule was ignored ? Particularly if ignored en masse ?
No I would not support that, in fact it ridiculous. This would mean an obese 50 year old with a heart condition would be allowed out, while a 75 year old who takes regular exercise is of a healthy weight with no underlying health conditions has to stay in lockdown. People need to take responsibility for themselves and decide their own risk.
