Steroid jab

I've had a steroid injection in my shoulder today. I was warned that a few hours later and tomorrow were likely to be painful, he wasn't joking! As advised I have taken paracetemol which has helped, but not enough. Would a bag of frozen peas or a hot water bottle help ease the discomfort, or a clove in my armpit, anything????

I have a high pain threshold but this is nasty, I've had steroid jabs in my knuckles before and am surprised how painful this one has been.

Oww !
What dose of Paractamol?

I would take Ibuprofen 600mgms as and when necessary up to 3 times a day.

Hot peas....cold peas....it doesn't really matter.........

The git only advised me of the pain....and ten days rest required.....after stabbing me with a very long needle!
What else did you want the "git" to tell you?
Question Author
OTC 500mg x2 as per packet instructions. He didn't specify so I'm just doing what it says on the box.

Ibruprofen upset me, I tend to go Diclofenic for inflammation. He was concerned about me taking Diclofenic (despite them being prescribed by my GP) due to long term kidney damage.
eccles you can't usually take anti inflamatory drugs with steriods ,so be carefull what you take.
why not ring nhs direct for advice

We overlapped Sqad. I would have appreciated being advised before I was jabbed that ten days rest were required. I just taken on a four week contract and although my work cannot be considered hard labour, it would have been useful to know beforehand!

Thanks Nanny but as the Dr has my history to hand I'd rather follow his advice than a telephone jockey at NHS direct.

I'm wondering what therapeutic treatments I could try to ease the discomfort. As my shoulder is hurting like buggery I'll go for frozen peas, lifting a saucepan out the cupboard to boil them is not going to help my pain!
do you have an oatbag that you can heat in the microwave I find heat helps.next time he could give you a jab that contains analgesic too ,he sounds a bit of a sadist...poor you.
Question Author
Can't do oats but hotty-botty is in position.

Seriously, could the steroid jab have had an analgesic component??? I might have a high pain threshold and seem quite resilient but jeez it hurts. We have friends in common, I might casually mention to them that I am going to hunt him down and stamp on him - I would hit him but my arm hurts ;-)
Have had two steriod jabs in the past four months in the shoulder, the pain lasted about three days after each injection, first one did not work too well, the second one sorted the problem out,yep it does hurt but hang in there because if it works, will be well worth it, just for the records did not find any relief from any pain killers etc. Just hang in there.
I had one in my elbow in July, now got to back and have another in my elbow and one in my shoulder....not looking forward to it. Just wanted to say, I was in the same position as you, I was in agony for ages....my doc advised me to get a sling and keep it elevated (I don't know if that would work for the shoulder though) and to not use it for 2-3 days

Sorry, i'm rubbish! I'll leave it to Sqad! lol

Hope you feel better soon x
yes absolutly they can give one with analgesic too , its used for arthritus jabs.Maybe they dont do them on nhsas standard. but if you are in alot of pain wouldnt hurt to ask next time
Question Author
KJN, I took great comfort from your reply until I got to "just for the records....." :-)

I don't mind being out of action tomorrow but I need to be bright, sparkly and entertaining, oh and able to use my arm on Saturday!!!

\\\eccles you can't usually take anti inflamatory drugs with steriods\\\

Why?
think that it has something to do with damage to your organs , when taking steriods you can only use nisads if you are on minimum dose steriod and then not for prolonged periods.Issume that the jab will be a high dose so nisads not a good idea unless you are told specifically to take them.
nannybooby......?
I had steroid jabs when I was pregnant....ouch!!

I thought you only needed one. When the nurse came back the next day to give me another I naively advised her that I'd already had it... :-(
Question Author
Right to be safe, it will be hotty-botty until 6pm. Thereafter it will be gin.
