soon I am going to the local shops as I buy my fruit and veg from the one & only stall nearby and its much fresher than the supermarket.
Apart from cucumber & lettuce what else should I not buy ? I will buy tomatoes but cook them before serving, I understand that cooked veg is okay, what about fruit ?

why not buy cucumber and lettuce (or anything else for that matter?)
Anything that you need to peel, such as bananas and oranges, should be fine. Frozen veg should be OK, too
No one seems to know where the Ecoli originated from, seems it is not the Veg but something else instead according to the News
just look for stuff grown in the uk and was well you could even rinse it first in very dilute milton solution...I kid you not then rinse in fresh water
Spain exports Veg and Fruit to other Countries but the Ecoli has originated in Germany only so far, so the source seems to be there otherwise there would be outbreaks elsewhere. Even the ones reported in this Country originated in Germany

I am going to buy potassium permanganate at the pharmacy to wash all the fruit, thats what we take with us when in India or foreign parts.
I'm going to protect myself by not going to Germany.
Spain has only 1 case of ecoli and she came from Germany.
I sincerely hope you don`t take potassium permananate on your journey from the UK. It is forbidden in passenger`s carry on or hold luggage and is classed as Dangerous Goods. It can be explosive when mixed appropriately and is only allowed to be shipped under proper conditions. The airlines would go balistic if they knew you had that on board.
I agree with 237SJ - its deadly and you should not put yourselves or other passengers in danger. I am sure there is something else you could use to wash edibles.
