I'm going to be dying my mates hair at the weekend which is a medium brown colour with blonde highlights. He is wanting to dye it a dark red shade but i'm worried incase it goes patchy because of the highlights. I thought about using a pre-lightener before the red but i'm not sure if it would work out right. He would kill me if it goes wrong lol :)

I bleached my naturally red hair, but then wanted to dye it back to near original colour so it could grow out. Make sure the dye is a golden brown colour. If you get a dye with red in it, the highlights will go pink.

Pink! Oh god.. he wouldn't like that! haha
No, I shouldn't think so! I spoke to two hairdresser friends before I did mine, and they both said the same thing. I used one described as golden brown and it came out a darkish, warm red.

Thanks :) I'll have a look and see. I should know these things! I even did a module on hair dye for work lol.
Good luck. Maybe get him drunk first and then tell him it was his choice :-)
I suggest Diacolor Richesse in the 4+ range with Releaser, that will give full coverage. A pre-lightener may cause an unreliable tint. Buy products from local Hair trade retail outlet.

Haha.. I don't think that would actually be hard to do! I may just treat him to a bottle of martini :D lol
