Modern day perms - yay or nay??

I have naturally 'wavy' hair & am finding straightening my hair with irons too damaging. I can leave my hair to dry naturally & it looks OK - but still far to much like an 80's perm gone wrong!! I have very fine hair, so when I curl it - it looks better & it has much more body. I'd love to go to the hairdressers & get some permanent (large) curl/wave put in it (think Carrie Bradshaw off of Sex in the City!) Is there such a thing? My hairdressers say there is only a basic small curl perm (YUK - been there when I was 18!!) Or a tempory 'wave' that is too subtle for my hair type. Help hair guru's out there!! Thanks
