What exactly do they do / claim to and are they worth paying extra for a decent one?

A good primer is essential but dont forget to rough up the dodgy surfaces first and fill the cracks with a good filler!
LOL at Ratter!
Oh!! makeup.......

I think the same applies!! it sticks better!
Yes it does fill in the cracks. Not too much roughing up the dodgy surfaces but exfoliation is good. Lol.
Makes it easier to put make up on evenly; one from Avon is pretty decent.
Lol @ ratter!! :D

It just evens out the skin tone. You don't *have* to wear it under foundation, you can just wear it on it's own.
I have real trouble with foundation (I have majorly oily skin) so I sometimes just use a primer. Estee Lauder do a nice one, which leaves your skin feeling silky soft. You only need a very small amount, so it lasts a long time :-)

Thanks I got the Revlon one as it was part of special offer... tested it on one hand... it did look slightly different & dare I say it, even younger than my other hand?!! I need a eye test too! Lets hope it has the same effect on my face!
I haven't found a decent primer tbh. I think it feels weird on my skin but then again i'm ok with just foundation. I bought a BB cream from GOSH last week and it's fantastic. It's the only one i've found that is light enough for my skin (both colour and creaminess). You can use that as a primer as well.
I use the Smashbox one when i can be bothered. It certainly smooths out the skin and foundation looks better but I've got oily skin and find a primer makes the make-up slip off quicker than without. BB creams I don't get at all - I've only tried Garnier and found it a greasy over-perfumed mess.

What's BB cream? I've yet to try the primer, but I've just realised both that & my foundation is in a pump action container - I wish I'd noticed before I bought - I hate these; I like putting mine on with a foundation brush as I hate rubbing make up in with my hands :-(
I wouldn't be without primer. It hides imperfections, open pores etc but you don't look like you are wearing makeup if you wear it on its own. Foundation goes on a lot easier if you are wearing it.
Avon does a brilliant one for £10 and you only need to use a tiny bit so it lasts for ages
I am working (in the garden shed) on a new foundation/makeup cream 2 in 1 similar to shampoo/conditioner. The intention being to create a time saving makeup that is easy to apply, when perfected you will apply it to the face & when you arrive home after your exhausting day it peels off like a mask & is left on a mannequin face until next morning when you simply replace it on your face ready to face the day again. We are also working very hard to make differing faces so that you can choose the one that suits your daily mood. I am seeking volunteers who are willing to help in testing, please leave your personal details with the Ed. (Lucky B*****d).

Erm... think I'll pass WR, but keep up the good work ;-)!
contd----
After many years of extensive research we developed the '' How long did you say your mother is staying'' face and also we were the first with the '' I saw these shoes & just had to have them'' face. When you are in the supermarket just observe the other shoppers, you will notice that quite a few of them are wearing our faces these days. All of these could be yours after a small injection to my bank balance.
