E.A. Poe wrote no poem with that title.  He did, however, write The Spirits of the Dead in 1827... is this what you mean?

Ooops!  Sorry, didn't fully read your question with the " added by AB... now I see the entire title...

Mr. Poe, obviouslt had a fascination and a fear of death.  this is reflected ominiously in almost all of his writings.

One contributor to a Poe discussion site suggests:

This poem has to do with visiting a place in remembrance of the dead where an air of presence still lingers even in the silence and motionless landscape. That "haunting" of memories, misty, silent but restive is the mood that weighs upon the poet. Only in "The Spirits of the Dead" it is further applied to a "dead" relationship between Poe and his lost love, in the sense that you can never forget the love you left behind.

I would suggest reading his short story, The Assignation for further insight...

Clanad, give credit your references!  That looks like P E Murphy's interpretation, unless you are PE Murphy...

What is it with ya'll?  I clearly stated "One contributor to a Poe discussion suggests"... Obviously not intending to suggest the response was my own construction. This was reviewed by me from a discussion site and I don't think anyone would know who P.E. Murphy is so why would it be necessary to cite him?  I have read a great deal of Poe, however...
