looking for a book from the 80's

I am looking for the title of a book but can't remember much about it ! I know it has a bird that flies upside down and some sort of creatures/animals that move around on springs. It would have been out in the 1980's.

Thanks NazNomad, it was a story. Have had a look at this and unfortunately this isnt it. I have been racking my brains and I also remember it had a big dark tree in it. It could have been called the learning tree and i think thats where these spring creatures lived.
