i got rid of my thousand year old sandwich toaster two years ago and bought a panini press instead. it's so much better than a sandwich toaster, cleaner to use, and makes lovely toasted sandwiches. as 2shortplanks says, you don't get the hard edge a sandwich toaster gives.
i would highly recommend a panini press instead...although i wouldn't put beans in it!
Rocky......never tried beans but I guess they wouldn't be too successful as the sandwich is being toasted in an upright position and the beans would probably slide to the bottom of the sandwich
I use Toast-bags now, make great toasted cheese sarnies.
On holiday took Toast-bags, made toast then put beans in bag, put in toaster, hey-presto Hot beans on toast. Buy some, experiment. (fiver for 2) Lakeland.

i like the 'old style' breville sort of sandwich toaster myself,
yeah you might get crispy edges of toast like ethandron mentioned, but you can easily trim them off if you dont fancy eating them,
but what you do get is a lovely golden toasted 'sealed' pocket of piping hot filling.. :o)
baked beans with daddies brown sauce is one of my favourites... hmmm niice.
See doesnt make sence - £5 for 2 toastie bags, yet in the sales you can get a GF for £30 and it does toasties, steaks, sausages, bacon, and pretty much everything else.
I know I am useless when it comes to money.... but that is just common sense to me!
Wiggle, - they last for ages had mine over a year now. If one hasn't got the storage for GF or the like these are ideal. I've got a frying pan for everything else.
Who wants to take a GF on holiday with em anyway.
I know about the storage thing, i live in a very ickle flat, that is smaller then any normal flat! (apart from the one we just moved out of!) but a GF is always worth having. Even when not being used it sits in the cupboard.
