In 21st century Britain is there a place for 'Travellers' camps?

If ordinary 'Joe Blogs' decided to park his caravan on council land, would that council offer him alternative accommodation if he moved?

What force are the authorities prepared to take to remove these travellers?

aog, see above :)
one minute IDS is telling people to be more flexible and move round in search of work... next we're telling people to settle down and buy houses. Mixed messages there.
a question I would ask this Government
When they slash the benefits, where are the jobs?
half a million to go?
still think they should cap benefits to no more than "£20,000 per year per houshold tho
Not exactly travellers are they!! how long have they been there! why don't they go and do some travelling!!!
I've never understood our indulgence of 'travellers'. No doubt there are laws to protect their rights but why? Why should we accommodate the wishes of a body of people who don't want to settle down into the community and be treated like and have the obligations of, everybody else, whether they, or some of them, regard themselves as a race with traditions or not?
