I read it maybe 20 years ago - set in 21st Century (i.e. NOW) concerning invasion of earth by various Aliens life forms one of which is a giant carnivor worm which makes a sound ilke "CHTHORR"

David Gerrold has a series of books featuring the "Chtorr Wars". (5 so far). AFAIK they're not in print in the UK, but you should be able to get them via Amazon. DG's site - http://www.chtorr.com/ - is a bit messy, but may be of interest.
