If the state doesn't contribute toward them, the only people able to be MPs will be those who can afford two homes out of their own pockets (which I suspect means mostly Tories). I don't find any of this wicked or greedy.
I have no objection to expenses, but come on, caliming for food and Blair claiming for his TV licence and some of them claiming for the council tax on second homes. and the fiddling of so called employees, ie: relatives that never actually do anything, one of them in Wales had his 80 year old mother down as his part time secretary,
MPs should be "Means Tested" just like the rest of us. And if they do need second accomodation for their job it should be paid out of their own pocket if they can afford it. I think we would then see their expenditure reduced, perhaps a one bed roomed flat instead of a mansion.
Regarding those non-London MPs accomodation, kathyan is correct why not a block of flats? But if security is the problem, I am sure there is enough room in the Palace of Westminster for them, since there can't be many in London, only on a Wednesday, judging by their turn-out for the rest of the week.

Sorry, you are MP for which contituency, jno? I have never heard of anyone stick up for an MP ever, and I did not know that they needed 2 homes at all. What are trains and travel expenses for anyway? If they live at Westminster then they won't need to travel there. I think the idea of an MPs only block of flats is brilliant. It could be owned by the Government, and if you lose your job, then you lose your flat, simple.
Mind you to give them their due the MP for Shrewsbury (sorry I forget the name now, help me out all you Salopians) did once run the London Marathon, and thus went up in my estimation. I wonder how many of them also give blood. Probably none, as they are all bloodsucking parasites.
