"If the novelists are to be believed, sudden changes of fortune were an increasingly common occurence in 18th century America; the ethos and forms of property of an expanding economy were producing social chaos. Marriage-seduction plots invariably tell the story of a female character's rise or fall in social position". Name two popular 18th century American novels that warned young women against following their heart at the cost of their financial security.

Novels written by American authors in the 18th C. are not very numerous. However, two that might fit your parameters are Hannah Webster Foster's "The Coquette" and William Hill Brown's "The Power of Sympathy". Both novels can be found in a single volume published by Penquin books. Hope this helps! Ingrid
