Several decades ago, only 1rst was acceptable... The net is full of it, too.

Hardly worth abbreviating to reduce by one letter....
usually followed by 2nd and 3rd, but Americans often write 2d and 3d.
Which of course we Brits would never have done, because they mean twopence and threepence in old money.
