Is it just me or do other people get frustrated by people like Jamie Oliver saying stuff like, 'You can get stuffed albators in all the supermarkets these days'. Well I live in Kent and we have big supermarkets down here but its really hard to find a lot of the stuff TV cooks reckon is freely avalibable on every street corner. For example I love Rick Stein but I cant cook 90% of his stuff because there's always somthing I can never get.

Just another point (really do go on too much don't I), Rick Stein loves to say "I really thing Blue leg Shark is underrated and we dont cook enough of it", thats cos' we cant buy the blinking stuff mate, along with every other fish and seaweed you keep going on about.
I get annoyed by the lack of choice and range as well - don't forget that Jamie Oliver (et al) lives in central london where you can buy anything anywhere anytime. Here where i live in North Yorkshire we have a huge Tescos supermarket and it really p1$$es me off that you can get 72 brands of sugar-and-$h1t coated cereal yet you get no choice at all in things like ethnic foods eg. chinese ingredients (bloody Sharwoods), olives, fresh fruit and veggies (what is it about supermarkets that they only sell Braeburns, granny smiths and Gala apples - you'd think these were the only apples on the planet!). btw what is a stuffed albator?
Perhaps I am lucky because I find that in the North West of England we can buy almost any food product. In or around Manchester is excellent for food shopping. As well as all the ethnic shops there are many traders in the markets of Bury, Bolton and Warrington etc who will get things especially for you. I use Rick Stein's recipes and have always been able to obtain the ingredients. I too do not know what an albator is.

Sorry my typing again, I was trying to highlight the mad things they suggest are freely avaliable such as "Stuffed Albatros".

I agree that in the large towns these things are avaliable but its the suggestion the "Your Local supermarket will have them" that gets me. I live 50 miles from London and you just cant get the things they say you can. Having worked in a Supermarket I know that they can order stuff in but thats not the point.
gilf, I live even closer to London than you do and my local supermarket never has any of these "readily available" products either.....in fact, I made a complaint about it, but alas, to no avail!
To his credit....little Jamie was responsible for getting Sainsbury's to stock curry leaves. But the most frustrating thing I find about him is that he is 14 and has a natural flair with scoff. I can't help liking the brat, however, Rick Stein Falls On His Own Skewer is the prog I look forward to...
i live in a small bit of london ( out west near heathrow / southall) which has apparently got the most impressive ethnic diversity in the coutry, our local tescos / sainsburys (even the small ones) stock a huge range of foods and specialities, the ethnic foods that darth is after in fact. i'm very aware of how no-one elses supermarkets stock this stuff because sometimes i have to go to them and it's really frustrating. the reason our's stock them has to be either consumer demand or they choose their stock according to local demographics. point is that big supermarkets can all get this stuff, you just have to make em want to :-)
That's why I like Nigella! Have yet to make one of her recipes and come across any difficulties. Trust me - get a Nigella book!! :)

PEOPLE!! go to cupboard, remove can of stuff, open, pour into a bowl, stuff in microwave, zap for 3 minutes, eat! The culinary skill of single brokenhearted guy!
sft42 - Are you still broken hearted after all this time? Has your heart not mended just a tiniest bit? Think about Christmas Eve and the other times when the women on this board tried their hardest to console you.

Focus your mind on AWT and think of the worst thing that could befall him - I said think, not say... :-D

It's heartening to know that there are no wooden hearts around here. :)

Hey no problem sft42. Theres nothing so painfull as the end of a relationship especially when its not you wanting the break up. I think most people have been there, I know I have many times.
Actually the best place to get ethnic foods near where i live is the (supposedly down-market) Morrisons which does the "east end" range and is top dog.

sft42 don't talk like that i love you man! (in a totally platonic "vader isn't gay" sort of way)
