Question Author
ps he said mona lisa, guernica and birth of venus
I had no ide what guernica looks like, and couldnt immediately bring to mind birth of venus either.
I would add the last supper and that melty clocks one
Question Author
or maybe the touchy finger one :)
Van Gough's Sunflowers?
Monet's Water lilies?
The melty clocks one is called the persistance of memory.
Guernica The Spanish Civil War destruction of town
Question Author
i googled guernica, and having seen it i still dont think i would ever have recognised it
Yeah...I can visualise them. I think I saw Guernica at the Museum of Modern Art in Manhattan when I was young.
Is Birth of Venus Botticelli?
I'd add Girl with a Pearl Earring.
Scream, sunflowers .
Girl with a Ring - Vermeer
Mona Lisa - Leonardo
The Haywain - Constable
Fighting Temeraire - Turner

Then choose between Rembrandt - self portrait, The Nightwatchman -Rembrandt but on show at the Rijkswijk rather than in The Hague, Guernica - Picasso, Manet's Water-Lilies at Givenchy, Monet's Olympia or the Bar at the Follies Bergiere or Van Gogh's Sunflowers or Starry Night - and there's always the Scream

I have been lucky to have seen them all in real life.
The Haywain - Constable . I've been lucky to stand in the very spot it was painted.
Constable is popular in Britain, I’m nor sure about the world .
I am not knowledgeable about famous paintings.

I like art that brings a smile to a person's face. This artist has made £275,000+ selling his art for charity.

I agree with Anne. Both Constable and Turner are well known here...I'd say not so much outside the UK.
I'm familiar with all of these, but I'd only put the first 4 or 5 in the 'most famous' category. And, no sign of 'The Scream'...though it appears on other lists.

Without scrolling down to view other answers here, my thoughts turn to . . .

The Mona Lisa
The Scream
The Haywain
Under the Wave off Kanagawa
Girl with a Pearl Earring
The Mona Lisa
Sunflowers
Water Lilies
Marilyn

Not sure what would get to number 5, but those 4 ... surely almost everybody in the western world knows them and who painted them.
Arrangement in Black and grey no 1 or unofficially known as Whistler's Mother.
For #5, maybe The Scream, maybe the Sistine Chapel ("The Last Judgment").
