I have heard rave reviews about opera.
Believe me, I have tried and tried to listen to it, understand it, enjoy it, but with me it falls on deaf ears.

I simply don't get it, don't enjoy it, don't even like it.

Is it the Emperors New Clothes again? You know, kid yourself that it is good, to impress others?

It must be good for some, but it,is lost on me.

The 'curate's egg' reference is generally mis-used. In the Punch cartoon from which it originates, it actually means 'I know that the whole thing is bad. I'm simply being polite/humble by saying that some parts of it are good':

Have a listen to this Theland. Beautiful.

I agree, some art forms are lost on some people.

I attend the Montreal Jazz Festival every year, and see some top level jazz bands and players, and a lot of the music and its appeal is lost on me. But I can still review and comment on it, as I have on dozens of gigs where the output is not necessarily to my personal taste - it goes with the job.

But opera, and ballet, are art forms outside my appreciation and understanding.

Same here, andy.
Although I do understand the skill that it must take to be able to do it.
And those (female) ballet dancers legs....

I agree although I think he is just pipped by my all time favourite Beniamino Gigli who, in the 50s, was responsible for bringing opera to the masses.
Gigli, but i still prefer Jussi Bjorling.. brilliant singer
