Recently, you recommended Heller's Catch 22 which was a coincidence as I had just started reading it!

I'm 4/5ths through it and I've never laughed so much with some of the exchanges between officers!

I read The Ragged-Trousered Philanthropists, I feel I was probably too young to appreciate it at the time.

Noonan/Tressell was actually born in Dublin.

I always remember the quote from the book when I read it years ago.

Mams, you're quite right, my mistake. Robert Tressell was born in Dublin, emigrated to Capetown as a child, and lived in Hastings when he returned, which is where he wrote the book. He moved to Liverpool with intent of emigrating to Canada, but died of TB before he could go.

one of my all time favourites. Critics occasionally pointedout in later years that he hadn't written another book as good; he just replied that nobody else had either, which was correct.
