As a child I had, from the library, a copy of this story illustrated by Jan Pienkowski in sillouette on gold leaf backgrounds. Has anyone heard of this? Do you know where I can get a copy?

You can buy it from Amazon.com: Baba Yaga: A Russian Folktale by Eric A. Kimmel, Megan Lloyd (Illustrator). I had read it too as a child (in Italy) although I had forgotten all about it until your message set me on memory lane...
If you want that edition you mentioned try asking at Loganberry Books: http://www.logan.com/loganberry/default.html they are pretty good at tracking down exact editions.

There is a version of Baba Yaga Bony Legs published by Orchard books, retold by Margaret Mayo and beautifully illustrated by Jane Ray called The Orchard Book of Magical Tales.
