Does anyone know where this quote originates? I think it's from a novel or short story but I've no idea which one.

Woody Allen in that long film, war and death or something?

God not much interest on this q.

there was a film 1967 - a funny thing happened on the way to the forum, frankie howerd, as a burlesque

and THAT title was based on a catch phrase formulaic joke- a funny thing happened to me when.....

because I remember my father commenting on it. Thing is that the catch phrase dated from the forties and I cant remember where. Sorry
