There used to be a classic body you could get - the Pentax ME super, that you can still pick up in 2nd hand camera shops for not much cash. Easy to use and a good starting point. Bit old now though so people might be able to suggest something more up to date. It depends what it's needed for.

Sounds good to me, jenky. I'd go for a Pentax.

You don't say why you need an SLR for college, Penny, but if your course requires you to learn about photography ( the relationship between aperture and shutter speed etc) rather than just 'taking photos', then I'd pick up an older model Pentax from a second hand shop. Failing that, a Nikon, Olympus or Canon would suit your needs just as well.

Firstly, with the popularity of digital cameras, there is a bit of a glut of 2nd hand 35mm cameras out there.
Secondly, a slightly older model puts you back in control (and gives you a better understanding of what you are actually doing) as opposed to the latest models that are 'automatic-all-whistles-and-bells-do-everything-for-you'.

If you can find a good photographic shop that sells second hand equipment, and is not part of a high street chain, then go in and I'm sure they will advise you honestly and equip you with what you need.

Best of luck - and keep us posted.
