Patricia Scanlan is good, as is Marian Keyes, Jane Green and Wendy Holden
What sort of book are you looking for?
I just finished "The Plain Truth" by Jodi Picoult. It was brilliant - story about an Amish girl accused of murdering a baby, and the lawyer who pleads her case.

Torey Hayden is not a new author, but has written some fab books - is a teacher of children with special needs and abused children.

I think Linda La Plante is similar to Martina Cole, altho have never read La Plante.

I have lots of Cole's books and I also enjoy books by Alice Sebold, Torey Hayden, Tony Parsons, Dave Pelzer, Cecelia Ahern and Julia Gregory.

Marian Keyes is similar to what you've been reading, so you'd probably like her, ditto Kathy Lette (Mad Cows etc)?

For a change, why not try Iain Banks (The Wasp Factory, Crow Road, Complicity, Espadair Street), or Christopher Brookmyre (Boiling a Frog, Quite Ugly One Morning, A Big Boy Did it and Ran Away).  They're not new authors, but consistently my favourites over the past 20 years.
