What is your favourite book of all time?

Mine has to be Lord of the Rings. I have read it loads of times, first tme probably over thirty years ago.
I love hearing other peoples favourite, ancient and modern !!!

A guy called David Gemmell (dead now) has written loads of books - all good in my opinion. But one of his best is called Legend. It's a fantasy thing about an old warrior who joins one last battle at a besieged fortress where he and his compatriots face overwhelming odds. The writer based it on the Spartans last stand at the battle of Thermopylae. It's a great read, full of pathos and great heroism.

To Kill a Mocking Bird must be one of the best books written in the 20 century and it's one of the few books I've lashed out on a really good hard back copy, the others being Lord of the Rings, Tale of Two Cities & Treasure Island. On a lighter note I'm very partial to Terry Pratchett. The really good books can stand re-reading as no matter how often you read them you alway find something new in them

Tara, I first read Wilt a few years ago. I was reading it in bed with Mr R snoring gently beside me. I laughed so much that I had to stuff a hanky in my mouth to stop myself laughing out loud particularly the bit with the inflatable doll. Oh my, Iam grinning just remembering it>

Tickledtrout, I am sure you will love it. The other Bolynn Girl has been recommended, I shall try it.

dominim, my second sprog has got that David gemmel and he has said he will dig it out for me.

Paddywack I agree, if a book has depth its great to pick up bits that didn't fully register when first read. I loved to kill a Mocking Bird, I think it was the first book I read that showed what justice really should be like

My first Tom Sharpe was Vintage Stuff - the school for "overactive underachievers!" (love that expression ;-)) - hilarious. So was Ancestral Vices - murder and mayhem!

I made the mistake of watching the film The Other Boleyn Girl. I think I've now ruined the experience of reading it.

Chosing just one is impossible! If you put a gun to my head, I'd probably chose "The World According to Garp", by John Irving though. Close second, "Lolita" by Nabokov.
And lots and lots of close thirds!!! lol

I still have a copy of Little Black Sambo that my Mum bought me as a small child. It's still a lovely book and a shame that it now has different connotations and got banned.

Zig - I love Enid Blyton books. They were my favourite, growing up.

This is quite some thread so haven't read everyones posts but i love anything by Lawrence Block. Especially the books about Evan Tanner. Easy readiing and funny. At least i like em any way. Also Carl Hiaasen (think i spelt that wrong). Similar style to LB but not quite as good.

Hi Rosetta! Well, there is only one "Garp" book...lol
But his style of writing is quite sarcastic, I suppose. Kind of modern fairy tales/dickensian stories, with some twisted ideas! The guy is a genius. I also adore A Prayer for Owen Meanie and A Widow for one year. In fact, I love almost all his books and have read them several times each...lol
