a book i lost

i once started reading a book about an orphaned black girl in Africa i think, who had to travel alone across the whole of Africa to Johannesburg i think, where a relation might be. i never got to the end, and i only remember little bits of it because i left it in a drawer in a theater and moved away, cannot remember title or author. if the story sounds familiar, please let me know!!!!
