Licorice Toffee

I used to love the licorice toffees that I bought in a small box very similar to a cigarette pack. Were they Callard and Bowser or a different brand?

They certainly were worth every penny. Far better than the Bluebird toffees I got in a tin every Christmas although I enjoyed them, too. I still have some of the tins

Callard and Bowser also used to do lovely nougat edged with rice paper in those boxes, there was always something very classy and special about the packaging, both the boxes and the bars inside. I think they did butterscotch too.

I remember the butterscotch but not the nougat. I do remember sweet shops having huge blocks of nougat that were sliced and weighed to order. Lovely

We seem to be losing brands that we were fond of all the time. That's the trouble with living too long!

It is a real shame when much loved brands cease trading but my big gripe and hatred is that these famous and trusted brand names can be bought and used by anyone that has the money.
Bush is an example - a brand name that is well known and trusted by older people especially for radios and televisions but is now owned by Sainsbury's and retailed in Argos - cheap tat.

Oh my...that's a blast from the past. The first English...British?...sweet I fell in love with when I came to the UK. I'd never had anything like them and I was addicted.
The butterscotch came second.

I also thought Callard and Bowser to be a very strange name for "candy".

Barry, on Amazon there's a liquorice toffee made by 'Buchannans' .. Also of Scotland. Reading the comments about the product, it's likened to the Callard & Bowser brand.

Can just about remember the nougat, can definitely remember the butterscotch. It made a lovely present if you got one.

I did wonder barry. I managed to buy some sugar free Blackpool rock as an occasional treat. You can only have a tiny bit at a time as it has a laxative effect .. ha ha!
