For an book that is impossibe to put down. I have read a few in my lifetime and am fed up with starting some which just don't grab my attention. I have tried a few best sellers but even they do not always hit the spot.

The funniest book in the English language:

If you are a cat lover then these cat books are great. I have read them over and over again and still laugh at the cat's antics.

If you like thrillers, then I would suggest anything by Harlen Coben. I find these impossible to put down. Anything by Martina Cole also has this effect on me and lastly, probably my favourite book of all time, The Pursuit of Happiness by Douglas Kennedy. On a lighter note, The House at Riverton by Kate Morton is also, in my opinion, brill !
Depends what you like. For me, any book by Lee Child or Michael Connelly is very hard to put down - I read them in record time!
Depends what sort of genre you want to read
Have a look at Fantastic Fiction . Gives you all new books in various genres .
Lots of stuff on Amazon has a "look inside " facility so you can read a bit first without parting with your hard earned and then finding you don't like it .

If you like crime novels then

The Observations - Jane Harris
The Journal of Dora Damage - Belinda Starling
I agree with 'notasyoungasiwas' that Kate Morton is a good author. I did not enjoy the enjoy 'The House at Riverton' very much but I found 'The Forgotten Garden' an excellent book to read.
'Diary of a nobody' is another 19th Cen. book that is laugh out loud funny
I'm just reading this, really enjoying it http://www.amazon.co....d-ebook/dp/B004EYSLOA
I agree with notasyoungasiwas. Harlen Coben - Tell No-one is really good. Birdsong - Sebastian Faulks (probably is a best seller thought).

A couple of older books - One flew over the cuckoos nest is one of the BEST stories ever as is Gone With The Wind.

I also like the Jack Frost books by R D Wingfield.
I'll go with Lee Child..........
I read The Watchers by Jon Steele recently and enjoyed it immensely.

Thanks for all your suggestions. At present I am attempting to read Cloud Atlas which was a best seller and the winner of a Richard and Judy Book Club read but I am surprised as most of their other books have been on the lightish side. If anyone has read Cloud Atlas please tell me if it is worth persevering.
any of the three Steig Larsson books, the girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc. it came as a surprise to me how good they are

for me this book was unputdownable - so much so i even used to take it to the bathroom for a wee with me http://www.amazon.co....qid=1311588552&sr=1-1
in fiction, his dark materials by phillip pullman
ps cloud atlas is OK ish. Which story are you on? I completely missed out the middle one as i couldn't understand it. Personally i think it's the format everyone raved about rather than the actual stories
Cloud Atlas is great, but not as good as his previous work: Number 9 Dream.

Keep going with it, a little bit of literary modernism never did anyone any harm.

I really enjoyed Cloud Atlas eventually but it was a difficult one to stick with. Would recommend The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, Room by Emma Donoghue, Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd, The Help by Kathryn Stockett and any of David Nicholls's books as all being un-put-downable. They're all pretty mainstream but I'm not one to go in for the bashing of popular books!
