I have been away on with one of my guys who i support, who is in a wheelchair also has sight issues, when i push her around, its amazing how many adults stare directly had her, dont mind children as they dont understand, but adults some of a certain age are the worse, when we took her a chinese restuarant, which was massive, we were put right at the back, hidden away from the people on the other side, she is as quiet as a mouse all the time,we had to liquidise her food thats all, for all she eats, i found that really annoying but didnt cause a scene, anyway they gave us her meal free as a goodwill gesture, still angry about her being isolated!!!!

Im sorry but lets face it some of them put you off your food.
Not in a nasty way but they just do
There are a lot of bad mannered people around.

I suppose they are so used to gawping at 'misfits' on shows like Jeremy Kyle they think the whole world is there for their own amusement.

My friend has a little girl with a highly visible disfigurement. When she sees people staring, she looks them in the eye and says., "I don't blame you for looking at ****. Isn't she the most beautiful little girl you ever saw?"

peaweaman she looks like a wee child, weighs a bucket of air, everyone thinks its a small child in the chair, and she doesnt speak or make screaming noises!!!!!
it doesnt embarrass me at all, and a friend of mine has a disabled boy. Maybe these people staring at her feel that they shouldnt have to look away, they cant win look away and you're scared look at them and you're intrigued in some way. I look at normal people in the street why cant I look at disabled and give a friendly smile. Fair enough you got free meal but that would not make up for putting you in the corner. that is wrong.

Thanks 4getmenot, dont know if it was a chinese thing?, i never see chinese people in wheelchairs, as anyone, when we took her to a italian in st andrews, fantastic service, wasnt bothered where we sat,at the window if we we wanted, he wasnt italian but couldnt do enough, even blended the food for her!!!!
My nephew is disabled and when we are out people do stare. If it's just a glance I usually ignore it but we have been known to actually ask them what their problem is, and they don't know what to say....people like that should be embarrassed at their low minded attitude. There is hundreds of disabled people out there all different from one another. You'll always come across ignorant people in the world, they've nothing better to do with their time.
I once had a one night stand with a girl in a wheelchair. She was quite fit actually.

did thaty help
They may have placed her in the corner because they felt her wheelchair would not be in the way for their other customers....that is just a guess. Of course-they could have told you of this before hand. But you are right about some people staring......some are so blatant about it. It is possible to look at someone-we are all curious-without behaving as if the person you are looking at has no feelings. It is just plain insensitve.
Im not embarassed by it but i get embarassed by myself in case I am acting in an incorrect manner. Hard to explain.

There is a young girl at my sons summer club, shes severely disabled and has everything done for her. But i feel myself considering everything i say or do around her so that I dont seem patronising in any way. Her disability doesnt bother me, she is a happy child it appears and enjoys her time there surrounded by the other children.

One of my best friends has a disabled son, hes in a wheelchair some of the time if in a lot of pain, but he can get up and walk or run (on painkillers). He doesnt seem to get any negative looks when we are out and i hope it continues that way.

pastafreak this outlet would of sat at least a couple of hundred,we were the only ones on this side, with a kinda of surround hiding us away!!!!
would you rather they looked away then sandrajo? i feel I have to look at them sometimes incase they think I'm purposely looking away, do you get me? Cant explain
she asked me to do her in her @ss too but I just caried on the normal way.

She was well dirty.
people are curious so obviously they will look, just like when you see anything else that is a bit 'different'. but to stare and act ignorant is out of order.

it is wrong if the restaurant stuck you out of site. but maybe they didnt want the wheelchair taking up room and blocking passageways in the main section, however if this was the case then I'm sure they would've told you.

one of my friends when we were growing up had developmental/learning difficulties and the older we got the more noticeable these were. people would sometimes say things or be rude. but he was always a happy and loving person, never letting the prejudice get to him. he is due to get married next year and has a full time job. the ignorant people of this world could learn alot from him.
I know what you mean 4getmenot, but there is a certain ignorant way they stare at him, there is no need for it, he's just a normal person.
but what is normal? Some people are just intrigued I guess. of my closest mates took a disabled boy as her date to the prom, you should have seen people stare then but it must have been one of the happiest days for him

The only down side is that we couldnt do it dawgy style

Did that help?
its funny really because one of my friends is a paraplegic, yet he finds the fact that people deliberately ignore him upsetting. He feels like he does not exist.
