When I had day surgery recently I was told I could keep my trainers on, whilst on the operating table! What do you think of that ??

I believe they remove and wash (or dispose of) all the sheets which cover operating tables.

I little shocked i wasn't even allowed to keep socks on when i had gall bladder removed. Of all the things you would think trainers would be totally unacceptable. All those germs yuck!!!!!!

Anyway you didn't keep them on did you?

XX

spacechimp - what's that got to to with keeping your trainers on?

Er, how does MRSA come into this?

You think your feet are cleaner than your trainers? I have serious doubts about that. Your trainers are merely contaminated with the sort of bugs that live on pavements while your actual skin harbours all sorts of nasties, and nasties which could infect another human easily. That includes MRSA (which, incidentally, you probably already carry, and has nothing to do with sports shoes whatsoever).

They also use disenfectant to clean - I was in a hospital on Saturday and the was blood up the wall - THAT worries me more lol
I was told I could keep my leather winter boots on a couple of months ago, when I had surgery on my arm!
Smudge If your female I think the surgeon was just being a bit kinky

having had day surgery 4 times unbelivable

Eels I have heard this before - that bare feet can cause more contamination than outdoor shoes. Is this true ? If so then perhaps everyone should wear their outdoor clothes and shoes in bed in hospital ! It just doesn't make sense to me.
Yep Hardy, I am indeed a female!
Cannot believe this... As I work in the care practice we were told that you can pick up MRSA from shoes etc!! And if I was in your position I would take this matter further, perhaps to the Medical Board. The hospital should be ashamed of themselves.
Question Author
I have looked up MRSA on Google and left emails on three websites. Only one replied, saying bare feet had more germs than outdoor shoes. I might take your advice Eastender. I will look up the Medical Board .. any idea of the website where I can find the hospital? It is in the Surrey area.

I'm sorry but MRSA lives on YOU, on your skin - it's probably there, right now, waving at you!

It won't do you any harm until you're given antibiotics or are unwell for another reason entirely.

I'm sorry but I'd rather risk infection from someone's shoe than from their foot - disgusting.

People who get outraged about MRSA really should learn a little bit more about bacteriology and epidemiology before getting hysterical.

Question Author
Eels, thank you for your reply. People like me ask questions on Answerbank (and sometimes feel they have the knowledge to answer them) purely because, in this case, I don't know the answer. Obviously in this case, you do. Who is hysterical?
Question Author
Sorry Eastender, obviously I know where the hospital is. I wanted to know where to write to !!
Not sure where it is. Google British Medical Board they must have a web site. Then perhaps you could write or e mail your query. Surely they will be able to give you a definete answer to your question. I dont claim to be a Doctor but only going by what I have learnt over the years.

Thanks everyone.
