In nautical terminology, the "hook" was the anchor and the sling was a sort of holder for the anchor. So Sling yer ook, is saying put the anchor in the sling, ie go away!

There are a lot of expressions whose origins are nautical based .

yeah that's a good one Baz.
Didn't know that. No surprise we can trace a lot of sayings to things nautical. We were a nautical nation.
FLogging a dead horse has a nautical origin, I think we were told about it on the Constitution in Boston harbour, can't recall the details.
