Last night at about 10 o'clock I spotted a flock of wild geese flying in a south to north direction. There were about 30 birds in the flock, flying in perfect vee formation. It was a beautiful sight. Does anyone know where they might have been headed for? I live in the southern part of Northern Ireland.

More likely to be feral semi-wild geese at this time of year.

I'd guess they were either greylag, barnacle or pink-footed geese heading to their summer feeding grounds. Visit the RSPB or Ulster Wildlife Trust websites for more details of possible destinations.
...And you know, of course, why one wing of the "V" is always longer than the other, don't you?

No! Please enlighten.
Probably could be Canada Geese.
Agree canadas are most likely- barnacles are away up near the arctic for breeding at this time of year, ditto for the pink-foot- we do ave resident greylags but more than likely canadas. And at 10pm likely headed for their roost- back from wherever they were feeding. Not likely to be long distance.
... There's more geese in the longer wing of the "V"... Sorry...
