I've got one of those green metal live food feeders (although I use mine for fat granules) surrounded by a cage - very useful as it usually keeps out all but the thinest Starlings, but allows Robins, all the Tits and occasionally Nuthatches free access. Yesterday however I saw a Chaffinch slide in and take away a fat granule. I found this surprising as of all the birds the Chaffinches seem to be the most conservative, prefering to ground feed off leavings from the sunflower heart hanging feeder rather than going to source, although some will. I know birds tend to be bolder at this time of year when feeding young but I have never seen this before. Has anyone else?
