If you ever get an email asking you to log into your account via a link (whether it's paypal, bank, catalogue or any online stores you are registered with) don't do it! Come out of your emails and go to the official website and check your account. If it is genuine and there are any problems then you will see them on the proper website - anything that asks you to follow a link is looking for your log in details.
also paypal and most other financial institutions and ebay ALWAYS address you by your registered name in the email.
Good advice here, there are a lot of email scams about, pretending to be from organisations and banks who you do deal with. I've got in the habit of just forwarding them to that organisations spoof or phishing email address. Never click on a link in an email, it's far too dodgy.
If I get an email from a company I am a bit unsure about, especially to do with money, I google a few of the words in one of the appropriate sentences, and it usually comes up as a scam.
I have just this minute received one from Paypal. They used my real name but said that a transaction has been declined, but I haven't made any transactions. Fake????
If you hover over a link in a spam email, it will most likely say something like
www.paypallink.cn instead of the genuine site.
Yesterday I bought something on the net via paypal I paid the amount £14.99. by credit card today I got an email addressed to me saying they wanted my bank details, I emailed them back to say I did not want to give the details and I did not think it necessary as I had paid by card, I am awaiting a reply. Paypal should really be looking into this.
DeeSa, keep an eye on that one - you shouldn't have responded really, that lets them know they have hit a real email account with their spam email. What you need to do now is to forward that email you received to Paypal's phishing report department, forward it to [email protected], then they can tell you if it's genuine or not.

Paypal will never send you an email like that without is having some personal identifier on it. Do you already have a bank account registered with PayPal? - only they do like to have one as a backup if you are a regular user.

PayPal will look into it but it's hard to know what they can "do about it" - most of the phishing emails are generated from overseas.
