I have new neighbours who have a young dog (well it looks young) - I think it's a Staffordshire Bull Terrier although I have only seen it once. It is constantly in the garden yelping and whining to be let back in. Tonight, it was making the same noises and someone opened the back door, did something (I am presuming they gave it a kick) as it 'cried out' and the back door shut again. Even my husband (who is not very observant) made a comment about the dog being outside all the time (even when it is chucking it down). Do you think this warrants a phone call to the RSPCA?

ive e-mailed you back but i would definitely phone RSPCA. they sound like ars*holes!
Yes! Give them a call and explain whats going on. The poor dog needs someone to help it. People shouldn't have pets if they cant treat them decently. If its outside all the time in this weather, its cruel and neglectful. Does it have any shelter and does it seem to be fed properly? I'm an RSPCA volunteer and I wouldnt hesitate to ring them.
Definately, even if it turns out to be a false alarm, it may well be that the dog is being neglected wilfully, no harm came come from informing RSPCA -go for it
Yes, I would.

They haven't lived there very long (a couple of weeks) and (this is going to sound really snobby but) they look like 'sorts'. Wanted to check I wasn't over-reacting/stereotyping people.
Not snobby sherradka, your feeling for an animal, do your best for it, ring RSPCA. Good luck, I'll leave a hug for you, do what you think is right.
Good luck with the RSPCA, they will say provided its fed it isn't suffering. Try the local dog warden, they might have a word with the owners.
I hope they will help, sherrardk.

I once reported a definite, no doubt whatsoever, cruelty case. They told me they might be interested if I could get video-recorded evidence!
Whilst I truly feel for the dog, in my experience the RSPCA are the pits. They are IMO only interested in fund raising. In the past I have paid money every month to them. When I rang them about an abandoned cat and her kittens they were not interested. The response was It happens.

Thanks everyone - I will try the RSPCA and if I don't get anywhere, I'll contact the dog warden.
Our dog warden's lovely, sherrard. I saw a man with a dog outside the vet's early the other morning - I stopped because the dog was lying on his side the floor - tail wagging but he'd gone off his legs. The man was distraught and the vet didn't open for another hour. I was just trying to contact the emergency vet when lo! the dog warden appeared, and said he'd look after man and dog. Angel of mercy!

Good luck for tomorrow - I'm not a dog person but can't stand to see people mistreating any animal. It must be very miserable being outside in this weather.

Hi Mrs C and Mickmak - I didn't realise they were so rubbish, I'll have a go and if they are pants I'll try the dog warden. Thanks too Boxtops, I didn't actually realise that there were such things as dog wardens.
I would report them definitely. Don't know if you're allowed to do this but you could record evidence on a mobile to show an officer if need be.

Something similar happened to me. My neighbour acquired a dog from someone and kept it tied up at the back of the garden. It was never taken out for walks and barked all night every night. I reported it to the RSPCA and something must have occured as the dog disappeared after a few days.

Hi Tigerblue and Jambos - I am going to ring the RSPCA in the morning (and the dog warden if necessary) as I would feel awful if something happened to the dog.
What happened when you rang the RSPC A? They were no help at all when I was in this situation with my former neighbours, because I had only heard the yelps and shouts but hadn't actually seen anything.
Question Author
Hi everyone - not sure if the dog actually lives next door rather than next door but one. When I am sure if where it lives I will ring the RSPCA and the dog warden. Thanks for all your comments and suggestions.
Sherradk- been thinking about this since Tuesday. Have you got any further?
Yes,it does warrant a phone call,i don't know why some "people"get animals at all!

Hi all, thanks for your comments and suggestions. Since I posted this I have only heard the dog once and I think it might actually live next door (rather than next-door-but-one who definately have a dog). I have been hanging out of the bedroom windows during the day to see if I can see it but nothing so far. As soon as I am sure of where it lives I will ring the RSPCA/dog warden.
