Illegal Coursing.....

I know hare coursing is illegal, so now coursing is done using a mechanical rabbit as a lure.
But-are there ever other illegal situations where another dog may be used??
I ask because in my search for a greyhound,one has come up that the rescue people think MAY have been used as a lure.

OMG, I certainly hope not! Poor creature.
But surely this would leave the perpetrators open to cruelty charges?

I spoke to the re-homing officer yesterday....and did not really think of this until I'd hung up. She (the dog ) is apparently quite a timid little thing...and was kept. in a shed....the mind boggles.

Can't see any sense in what they are suggesting - even in proper coursing two dogs run against each other and they would never chase or attack the other dog - they are loose with no muzzles and hunt by sight and would only chase something small moving very fast, they would easily recognise another dog even if a long way off.

there are many really cruel 'uses' for small dogs (and cats etc) but can't honestly think why a dog would be used as a lure and what the benefits would be (rabbits, hares etc are readily available to those who want them) - what makes the rescue place think your dog has been used as a lure? - to have made that statement they must have had reason and proof to back it up presumeably.

I am dealing with one of the larger greyhound rescue groups...the dog in question is a grey/whippet cross. I DON'T think I heard wrong.

Unfortunately the sickos sometimes use other (timid) dogs to hype up their fighting dogs. The brutes are usually restricted to actual contact to the 'lure' by the length of the chain that holds them. Can you imagine how that poor dog must feel having some fearsome beasts growling a few inches from them?

Sometimes the super sickos actually use another dogs to give their fighting machines practice and let them lose at them. The mind boggles.

Wildwood, you are presumably talking about dog fighting not coursing. Greyhounds are the most placid of animals and even when racing or coursing they will very very rarely shown any aggression, sometimes they do get over excited and that is why they wear muzzles when racing in case they grab hold of another dog at the end of the race when they are after the 'hare' (which is often a plastic bag).

Pastafreak said they thought the dog MAY have been used as a lure, i.e. as in lure coursing. What you are talking about is using another dog to bait a fighting dog. Not the same thing at all.
