The Adam's apple is merely thyroid cartilage (not the thyroid gland) that increases in size with puberty. It is most noticeable in men hence the name. Many mammals have a similar structure on the larynx but it is most prominent in species where the male has a louder voice.

ALL mammals have a voice box (as wildwood says Thyroid cartilage)
The main function of the voice box is that of a protective mechanism for the lungs against food and water entering.
The production of sounds from the larynx (voice box) is purely secondary.
