Recently I have noticed an insect feeding from my pansies. It looks rather like a fat wasp but has browny-grey stripes not yellow. In some ways it remiinds of a humming bird in that its wings beat very, very fast and it has a long proboscis which it inserts into the flowers. Is there such a thing as a humming bird wasp?

I think this is a moth, a hawk moth looks very like and is often mistaken for a humming bird.

Thanks DaisyMae - I googled the hawk moth and am sure that that is what I have seen. Evidently in the USA it is sometimes known as the humming bird moth but I have always seen it in broad sunlight so never thought of it as being a moth.
