Tom, our ginger cat is 16yrs old and has recently endured 3 enemas from our very kind and gentle vet!! We, like Tom are stuck, to know what to do to help him with his movements, as apart from that he is an extremely healthy and cool cat.We have tried the daily liquid paraffin/lactalose and replaced his Royal Canin for mature cats with fish and wondering about cod liver oil. Anyone with any ideas would be greatly apreciated.
Thanks
Liz & Tom

Sorry to hear about your cat. Lactulose is meant to soften the stools and should be given daily. Liquid paraffin is simply to lubricate him to make things easier if he gets stuck.

One other thing to try is peridale granules, available from your vet. They absorb water so prevent the stools from drying out.

Don't use cod liver oil. The stuff for humans contains excess vitamin A and D which can be harmful to cats.

If he becomes constipated for more than a couple of days take him to the vet because his nerves and muscles can become damaged.

Hope the big fella appreciates what you're trying to do for him.

Thanks for words of wisdom and I'm sure he appreciates the care, he purrs all the way through!
You have clarified the use of peridale as i understood it only to be used in cases of runny stools and yes when the vet has inspected Tom's poos they have been very dry and hard, almost sand-like. If after a day or two Tom hasn't been, we always return to our vet and I think you're correct about the damage to to the muscles and nerves.
Thank you again
Liz
I know this may sound silly but have you tried tinned tuna in veg oil,1/2 tin a day NOT the tuna in brine that should oil his digestive track all the way down so it should be easier for the little fella to pass a pooh.
Naturally cats eat raw meat & fish.....diet is all important!
