hi there,

I've got a 18 month old Yorkshire terrier & Pomeranian cross. Over the last 3 months or so we've noticed that the skin on his front legs is very very red. He's been licking at it so much that his fur is now going bald. of course we've taken him to the vet and he said he suspects it's some sort of allergy. We were given special shampoo to bathe him in to ease irritation and some tablets to calm the irriation too. The tablets reduce the rash but as soon as the course ends his skin gets sore again.

Anyone got any ideas what we can do? We've been back to the vets a couple of times but they jsut give us the same medication which works for a week! Is there any way to work out what his allergy is to?!

Any advice anyone can give would be good.

I had a similar problem with a springer spaniel I had a few years ago. Every summer she'd lick all the fur from between her toes. The Vet treated it with antibiotics and steroid creams.

In the end I asked if there was anything else and the vet suggested evening primrose oil capsules. But said it would take 3 months to see if it worked and cost 90! And if it worked my dog would be on it for life.

On a friends recommendation I went to another vet and got a referral to a veterinary college. It turned out that my dog had an allergy to harvest mites, that could be resolved by washing her feet in salt water! But the consulation cost over 100

You don't need to go as far as changing your vet, but I think it's certainly worth going back to them and asking if there are any skin tests they can do. It may be that the test are expensive and if the current treatment resolves the problem, your vet is reluctant to put you to more expense.
yes I was going to suggest skin scrapings tests to look for parasites!
I had a collie that was alergic to grass!!
If you want to try evening primrose oil you can use that meant for humans, Tesco do a really cheap one. Just give a capsule in the food or try applying a small amount of aloe vera gel (99% pure or it's no good) this is excellent for skin complaints but not sure how you will stop him licking it off!
You can get aloe vera from Holland & Barrett that you can add to his food, this might be a good thing to try.
